Our New House Construction
I am standing at the foot of the steps in the rec room looking to my left
I am looking back at the area that will be our utility & storage room
These boards are for the ceiling in the main core of the house and the family room. They have been stained and are now awaiting their 1st coat of polyurethane. The staining is done in the garage and then moved to the kitchen where two coats of poly are applied..
After the 1st coat of poly they are moved to this rack in the dining room to await a 2nd coat of poly
12-30-10 - I can't believe how fast the time flies. There is so much to do and so much going on it is hard to keep up with everything. I hope your Christmas was as good as ours. We were in Chevy Chase for the Christmas eve service at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church and Christmas morning with Sarah, Jacob, Kristin, the kids and Lorraine and Gene.
Well, since my last update, way too long ago, there has been quite a lot of activity at the house. Porch roofs are finished, porch ceilings are completed, the dry wallers have finished hanging the wallboard and are now putting the spackling compound on, the ceiling in the family room is completed and John is starting to put the ceiling in the main core of the house. All of the rough-in plumbing and electrical work is completed. All of the heating equipment has been installed and the duct work is now being installed. The interior doors are in and being stained and the door hardware has been ordered. Monday I will order the kitchen appliances and check on the status of the wood floor order. All of the cabinets for the kitchen, pantry and bathrooms have arrived and are waiting at the warehouse to be delivered. They probably won't go in for another month. Yesterday the 500 gallon propane tank was installed. What an operation that was. It is being burried and the filling tube in the center of the tank had to be an minimum of 10 feet from the house. Murphy's law ensured it was only 7' from the house so the hole had to be enlarged and it was sandwiched inbetween electrical and water lines. Gary was able to get his backhoe in there and work his magic. The solar tubes have all been installed. In the family room they aren't as dramatic as they are in the hallway. The family room faces south and is a pretty sunny room while the hallway is burried in the middle of the house.
I was most impressed by Davenport Insulation of Winchester. The first thing they did was to spray 2" of foam insulation on all of the exterior walls which seals all the little gaps etc. Then they went in the basement and crawlspace and sprayed foam in the area where the floor joists rest on the foundation thus sealing all of that all the way around the house. Then they used foam and caulking around all of the windows and where there are multiple studs together on the outside walls and along the plates at the tops of the walls. Then came the batt crew which installed all of the insulation batts over top of the foam and in the vaulted ceilings. When that was completed they came back with another crew who blew insulation over all the rooms with flat ceilings. John, being the builder that he is, installed cat-walks in the ceiling areas providing access to the three gable exhaust fans.
This is the 2" of foam being applied to the exterior in the family room. When the foam is dried an R-13 batt is put over the foam thus providing an R-26 value in the walls.
You can see the batt insulation in the kitchen area

Needless to say December brought us cold weather most of the month
